Since butterflies undergo several stages of metamorphosis, the butterflies in weddings symbolize new beginnings. The butterfly is a powerful symbol of transformation. It leaves the safety of the cocoon to become a butterfly. The butterfly is a reminder to make changes when the circumstances call for it — just like the life of married couples where life changing experiences are truly inevitable.

The possibilities of incorporating butterfly release at your wedding are endless. You can be as creative as you want! Releasing butterflies while you walk down the aisle is very romantic. Imagine being showered with confetti that flies! It can also be released during the recessional. Following an indoor ceremony, your guests may line-up outside the church and as you are leaving, each guest will shower you with live butterfly confetti as an alternative to paper or petal confetti, balloons, rice or bubbles. It will also be meaningful if you chose to release the butterflies after reading your vows or after you have been introduced to the congregation as husband and wife. A butterfly release during “the kiss” can be a beautiful finale to the church ceremonial rites. The butterflies can also be released at the reception during the grand entrance or during the first dance as husband and wife. Others opt for a butterfly release ceremony instead of the traditional dove ceremony.

Types of Release

The butterflies can either be released individually or all at the same time in a cage or a box. You may want to consider the event to decide what type of release to do. You can order enough butterflies to hand out to all of the guests, or you can just have the selected party do the release, or the celebrant(s) can do a mass release. When doing a mass release, four to five dozens make a nice release. You can do more or even less, depending on the impression that you would like to make. The individual release envelopes are a triangular shaped envelope, where the butterfly comfortably hibernates inside. The mass release cage comes in different sizes depending on the number of butterflies you’ll release. You can opt to make your own. They can range from a plain basket with netting wrapped around it to the more extravagant box decorated with ribbons and flowers.

Just like butterfies, human beings undergo several stages of metamorphosis in its lifetime. We are just like butterflies — the fertilized egg is planted in our mother’s womb.  From our day of birth we are like the caterpillar which can only eat and creep along.  At death we are like the dormant pupa in its cocoon while the emergence of a beautiful butterfly from its cocoon is like the process when our spirits leaves our material body. This symbolizes rebirth after death. The transformation of butterfly from pupa to adult is a metaphor of the soul’s resurrection and immortality. The release of butterflies at memorial service is a perfect way to acknowledge that your loved one has departed this life for eternal happiness and glory. The butterflies released in honor of your loved one will return to nature to live and complete their life cycle. This will be a constant reminder to your family that there is no reason to grieve for the cycle of life continues.
